It is important to promote diversity to realize further improvement of science and technology standards and to enhance innovation. In recent years, “unconscious bias” is drawing attention as one of the critical factors that impedes its promotion. Thus, Office of Diversity Promotion organized a symposium to deepen our understanding of this concept.
At the symposium, we invited Machi Dilworth, Vice-President of Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology Graduate University (OIST) to give a keynote lecture entitled “What unconscious bias brings to the fore.”
After the keynote lecture, a panel discussion entitled “Maximizing diversity in RIKEN ― A perspective from unconscious bias ― ” followed, in which Yoichiro Matsumoto, Executive Director of RIKEN, Motoko Kotani, Executive Director of RIKEN, Mayumi Kudo, Director and Executive Vice President of Osaka University, Etsuko Sugawara, Vice President and Executive Director of Iwate University, Ryoichi Fujii, President of Research Organization of Information and Systems (ROIS), and Kaori Hotta, Vice President of Saitama University introduced initiatives taken by each university or organization to realize an environment harnessing diversity. We had comments and questions actively from the floor and held a vibrant discussion.
A total of 136 people, including outside visitors, participated.
