Special Postdoctoral Researcher Mariko Kimura has won the Inspiration Prize in the First Marie Sklodowska Curie Award
Special Postdoctoral Researcher, Mariko Kimura (Teruaki Enoto Extreme Natural Phenomena RIKEN Hakubi Research Team, RIKEN Cluster for Pioneering Research) has won the Inspiration Prize in the First Marie Sklodowska Curie Award. The award was established by Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST) and the Embassy of the Republic of Poland last year to commend young female researchers who aim to be active on the global stage, with the objective of contributing to further promote the active participation of female researchers in Japan.

Work and Nursing Care Seminar
The Work and Nursing Care Seminar was held online on Friday, August 27, 2021, entitled “Nursing care and finances in later life: Latest information about home care and institutional care.” We welcomed Ms. Yumi Yamanaka, the President of Aging Design Labo, as a lecturer. She provided guidance on planning for the consequences of aging and preparations we should make especially in terms of housing.

We provided the “FY 2021 second-half subsidies to hire support staff for researchers who are pregnant, raising children or caring for ill/older family members”
We offer subsidies to help cover the cost of a support person to assist a research staff member who is pregnant, caring for small children, or engaged in nursing care, so that the staff member can continue to conduct research.

Diversity Seminar “Why are physics and mathematics seen as masculine subjects? Gender bias caused by social climate and images”
The Diversity Seminar entitled “Why are physics and mathematics seen as masculine subjects? Gender bias caused by social stereotypes and images” was held on Thursday, July 15, 2021. We welcomed Professor Hiromi Yokoyama from Kavli Institute for Physics and Mathematics of the Universe (Kavli IPMU), and the Graduate School of Interdisciplinary Information Studies, the University of Tokyo as lecturer for the event. In light of the current situation in Japan where few female students choose to study in STEM fields (science, technology, engineering and mathematics), particularly in physics and mathematics, Professor Yokoyama talked about the findings of her project that elucidated the impact of gender bias caused by social norm, images and culture.

FY 2021 Individual counseling sessions to support those who wish to balance work and long-term care
We are holding online individual counseling sessions for those who have anxiety and worry about caregiving and who experience feelings such as “I’m extremely stressed because I’m worried about providing long-term care for my parents,” “I’m anticipating providing long-term care for my parents and have no idea where to start,” and “I don’t think I can take on both child raising and long-term care at the same time.” The counseling sessions are provided by a certified social worker once every other month from June.

“Academic and career counseling for female students provided by researchers” was held at the FY 2021 RIKEN Open Day
On Saturday, April 17, 2021, we held an online event “Academic and career counseling for female students provided by researchers” at the FY 2021 RIKEN Open Day. Many entries were submitted from junior/senior high school students to graduate students nationwide, both male and female.

Feedback was given through a questionnaire after the end of the event. Comments included: “I was able to hear the opinions of the researcher and it was very useful,” “I would like to take part in the event again in the future,” etc. -

We published the collection of interviews that features seven scientists with varied experiences and careers who conduct research in the front line.

FY 2020 Leadership Development Program for Female Researchers
From January to March 2021, we conducted a FY 2020 Leadership Development Program for Female Researchers. This training program has been in place since FY 2019 with the aim of researchers acquiring the multifaceted skills and abilities they require, and to further strengthen leadership. In addition to upskilling through training sessions on communication and English presentation, this year’s program contained seminars and dialogues by an Executive Director as well as female PIs. All six seminars and sessions were held online.

All Nippon Diversity Network certificates awarded
A ceremony to award All Nippon Diversity Network certificates was held online on December 14, 2020.

The certificates are awarded to all institutes and organizations that participate in the All Nippon Diversity Network and strive to create an environment that promotes the active participation of female researchers. The certificates were awarded by President Nishio Shojiro of Osaka University, who also serves as the General Manager of the Network.

Women in Science Japan (WiSJ) hosted a symposium
The International Symposium for Female Researchers in Chromatin Biology (ISFRCB) 2020 was held as a satellite symposium of the 43rd Annual Meeting of the Molecular Biology Society of Japan (MBSJ) on Saturday, December 5, 2020.

In 2019, in addition to the scientific talk session held exclusively for female researchers, a scaled-down course on laboratory management was provided by a lecturer from the European Molecular Biology Organization (EMBO).
Unfortunately, the 2020 symposium was held online due to the COVID-19 pandemic; however, on top of the scientific talk by young female researchers in epigenetics, various case examples on the training and promotion of female researchers were shared, which triggered a productive exchange of opinions among the researchers participating from around the globe.

RIKEN Chief Scientist Sakai Nami received the 2nd Brilliant Female Researchers Award (the Jun Ashida Award)
Chief Scientist Sakai Nami (Star and Planet Formation Laboratory, RIKEN Cluster for Pioneering Research) received the 2nd Brilliant Female Researchers Award (the Jun Ashida Award). The award was established by the Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST) in FY 2019 as part of its efforts to promote the advancement of women researchers and to recognize women researchers who are conducting outstanding research activities that will contribute to the future to create a sustainable society and institutions promoting women’s empowerment in science.

By pioneering a new field of study that integrates astronomy and chemistry, Chief Scientist Sakai has explored a fundamental question in astronomy, "How universal is the existence of environments like the solar system in the universe?” and achieved remarkable research results, which have led to elucidating the origins of various planets outside the solar system and the formation of planetary systems. Her award is a result of overall recognition for her research achievements as well as her social contributions through outreach activities, including lectures and exhibitions, and serving as a lecturer in the RIKEN Leadership Development Program for Female Researchers to promote the advancement of women and the development of young female researchers.

Work and Nursing Care Seminar
The Work and Nursing Care Seminar was held online on Tuesday, September 15, 2020, on the theme of how family and nursing care should be in the coming era (that employees should not have to or be made to leave jobs to care for a family member). We welcomed Mr. Joe Sakai, the Executive Vice President and Chief Strategy Officer of LYXIS, as a lecturer. He provided us with an explanation about the aging literacy required for the post-coronavirus era.

The 13th Shiseido Female Researcher Science Grant, which aims to support female researchers who are anticipated to make a significant contribution to the development of science and technology and who are motivated to take a leadership position, was awarded to Dr. Ritsuko Morita, research scientist in the Laboratory for Tissue Microenvironment, RIKEN Center for Biosystems Dynamics Research.

We have started providing discount vouchers for babysitter dispatch services (sponsored by the Cabinet Office) to support those who wish to balance work and childrearing. Given that we are required to adopt a new lifestyle due to the outbreak of COVID-19, we are trying to create an environment where babysitter services are provided as an option for researchers.

RIKEN Leadership Development Program for Female Researchers (RLDPF)
From January to March 2020, we conducted a training program (which consisted of five seminars and training sessions) targeted at young and mid-level female researchers who aspire to be principal investigators (PIs) in the future. The course included training to enhance their skills, mentoring sessions with PIs as well as luncheon meetings with an executive director. It helped female researchers to acquire the multifaceted skills required to become research leaders and also promoted networking among the researchers.

We held a seminar entitled “Be prepared for balancing work and long-term care: What happens if a parent collapses?” at Yokohama Campus on Tuesday, October 15, 2019. We welcomed Ms. Saeko Ota, President of NPO Paokko and a journalist specializing in nursing care and livelihood, as a lecturer. She spoke about tips for balancing work and nursing care of family members who live separately. She encouraged us to learn about nursing care, support systems and financial issues while parents are well.

We held a seminar entitled “To balance work and long-term care: Mind preparation for working caregivers” at Wako Campus on Thursday, October 3, 2019. We welcomed Ms. Mie Waki, Representative Director of the Organization for Promoting Measures to Prevent Leaving Jobs for Caregiving and President of Work & Care Balance Lab, as a lecturer. From her own experience of leaving a job for caregiving, she pointed out that caregivers are often caught up in situations where they fail to see the options. She provided the information necessary to keep living our lives as before, while taking on the role of caregiver for family members.

Individual counseling sessions were held to support those who wish to balance work and long-term care
We held individual counseling sessions provided by a certified social worker and psychiatric social worker to give advice to those who have anxiety and worry about their current caregiving situation and the future. The counseling sessions addressed concerns such as “I’m extremely stressed because I’m worried about providing long-term care for my parents,” “I have no idea where to start in anticipation of providing long-term care for my parents,” and “I don’t think I can take on both child raising and long-term care at the same time,” and were held once every other month from September 2019 to March 2020.

We updated the Childcare Guidebook and Nursingcare Guidebook
We updated guidebooks that give useful information about the support programs related to pregnancy, childbirth, childcare and family (long-term/nursing) care. For maximum ease of use, we have separated the “childcare” and “nursing care” parts, and published each guidebook in Japanese and English.

We held a seminar entitled “Be prepared for balancing work and long-term care: What happens if a parent collapses?” at Yokohama Campus on Monday, February 4, 2019. We welcomed Ms. Saeko Ota, President of NPO Paokko and a journalist specializing in nursing care and livelihood, as a lecturer. She spoke about tips for balancing work and nursing care of family members who live separately. She encouraged us to learn about nursing care, support systems and financial issues while parents are well. Following the seminar, we held individual counseling sessions and information exchange sessions that were both attended by local social workers.

We held a Diversity Seminar entitled “Diversity management for leaders ~The impact of diversity and team building~” on Friday, January 18, 2019. Mr. Ikutaro Masaki, Project Researcher, Center for Research and Development of Higher Education, the University of Tokyo, gave a lecture on the themes of “Why is it necessary to improve diversity in organizations,” “What are the effects of enhancing diversity,” and “What needs to be done to enhance the effect by whom” from the perspective of social psychology and business administration. He explained the research that has been done on this topic, which was mainly conducted in Western countries, but also discussed research in progress here in Japan.

We held a Diversity Seminar entitled “The impact of unconscious bias and what is necessary to address the issues” on Monday, December 10, 2018. The lecturer, Ms. Sook Ja Park, Diversity & Work/Life Consultant, explained how unconscious bias can manifest in different situations and the impact that has, and introduced measures necessary to address the issues.

RIKEN Long-term Care Guidebook
The need to provide long-term care for aging parents often comes suddenly - with illness, injury due to falls, or dementia. We published “RIKEN Long Term Care Guidebook,” which provides information and advice on Japan's nursing-care insurance system, current support systems that RIKEN offers as well as various long-term care services that are available. The Guidebook is available in Japanese and English.

FY 2017 Symposium “Maximizing Diversity in RIKEN: A perspective on unconscious bias”
On Wednesday, February 14, 2018, the Diversity Promotion Office held a symposium to deepen our understanding of “unconscious bias,” which is recognized as one of the critical factors that impedes the promotion of diversity. We introduced initiatives taken by other universities and organizations, and exchanged information and opinions to increase the effectiveness of our respective diversity promotion policies.

FY 2017 Diversity Seminar “How to maximize your potential at work”
We invited Ms. Yoshie Komuro, President of Work-Life Balance Co., Ltd., who has extensive experience supporting the implementation of work style reform, to give a lecture entitled “How to maximize your potential at work: tips for both men and women” at our Diversity Seminar held on Wednesday, January 24, 2018. By citing best practices of companies and research institutes that adopted effective systems and led successful reform, she introduced in a comprehensible way the idea of “work style reform” and what actions we could take.

On Thursday, November 2, 2017, we invited Ms. Kazumi Horie, General Manager of the Longevity Group of the Health and Welfare Department of Wako City Hall and held a “Dementia Supporter Training Course.” Prior to the seminar, we also invited a specialist and organized “Individual Counseling Sessions on Nursing Care” over lunch.

On Wednesday, November 1, 2017, we welcomed RIKEN Executive Directors to a lunch meeting entitled “Let’s talk with female researchers,” where we had active discussions on how female researchers can balance work and life events, and we shared common awareness and expectations of the issues, including career development for female researchers.

Counseling Sessions to Acquire Competitive Research Funds
In conjunction with the individual sessions organized by the External Funds Office, the Diversity Promotion Office provided support for the preparation of application forms and released “tips for acquiring Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research” internally. The sessions were held at Yokohama Campus on Wednesday, September 27, Kobe Campus on Monday, October 2 and Tsukuba Campus on Wednesday, October 4.

The “RIKEN International Female Scientist Colloquium: Harmony in the Wisdom of Life Science and Physics / Chemistry” was held on Tuesday, September 26, 2017. Professor Catherine Ross of Pennsylvania State University gave a keynote lecture, followed by a research presentation by a young female researcher and a networking event.

At Tsukuba Campus on Monday, September 25, 2017, we organized a mini seminar on the theme of “Iku-boss” co-sponsored by the External Funds Office. “Iku-boss” refers to a boss who actively works to support the development of women and supports their childcare needs.

Nursing Care Seminar “Let’s Learn about Long Term care”
The Director of the Health and Welfare Department of Wako City Hall gave a lecture on the “long-term care insurance system” and “comprehensive care” on Tuesday, August 22, 2017. After the seminar, we welcomed an adviser and carried out individual counseling sessions.

We ran a booth at the exhibition “Global Women in Science and Technology (GWST)” held at Yokohama Symposia, Kanagawa prefecture, on Saturday, July 15, 2017. The exhibition was sponsored by the Japan Network of Women Engineers and Scientists and co-hosted by the city of Yokohama.

We published a guidebook that profiles female researchers and their research activities. The title of the guidebook is “RIKEN female researchers at the forefront of science 2016 – Striving for diversity in the research environment.” The guidebook was published both in Japanese and English.
